TAN CHENG LOCK

At both ends of the street
Signplates bear the name
Of an illustrious son.
His only son, too, every Baba knows,
Deserves a token somewhere,
And in their memory.

In this very street
In the lavish study
Of the most famous house
Were made and sealed
A people's fortunes,
And their fate.

by Ee Tiang Hong , Heeren Street
Cheng Lock completed his Standard VII in Malacca High School in 1899 .

MERDEKA KE 54 and SYAWAL 1432H

Hari Raya is a celebration observed by the local people annually. All people welcome, enjoy and celebrate the traditional customs cheerfully and warmly.

Hari Raya was celebrated together with the Chinese New Year not long ago. Then, Hari Raya was celebrated with the Diwali a couple of years back. Yesterday, Hari Raya was celebrated with the Merdeka, the 54th Malaysia Independence Day.

An Open House is hosted by the Governor of Melaka in the main hall of the Melaka International Trade Centre, at Ayer Keroh.

A selected image to show the spirit of Hari Raya by the local people. I've got this image fresh when it was shared by our Chief Minister of Melaka on my facebook wall last night. View more images at www.facebook.com/datuk.seri.mohd.ali.rustam

Selamat Hari Raya Aidil Fitri.
Ma'af Zahir & Batin.
Selamat Hari Merdeka.

BEAUTIFUL CRAFTMANSHIP, CHETTI VILLAGE, MELAKA

The Chettis have been around since the reign of Parameswara. Back then, most of them belong to the group of traders who were living in Kampung Kling and Kampung Belanda. They originated from the Coromandal Coast, Kalingapatnam, South India and Tamil Nadu.

In the earlier days, there were Chettis holding high posts in the government administration such as that of the Prime Minister. However, things began to change during the Dutch colonization. The Chettis were imposed strict supervision in their trading which eventually caused them to move to more remote areas, such as Gajah Berang, Bachang and Tranquerah.

As a result of the incident, many Chettis decided to switch their profession from trading to agriculture. The present Chetti settlement in Gajah Berang is under the administration of a Trustee by the name of Kovil Sri Venayagar Moorthi.
